Introduction :-
The goal / aim of sports medicine is to maintain, sustain, and at times to regain peak physical fitness i.e adaptability to stress---- physical and mental. Main functions of sports medicine are promotive, educative, formative, recreative, competitive, therapeutic and rehabilitative in nature.
Sports medicine overall is used to improve health and maintain good health as well as fitness. It can also help strengthen sports performance.
Sports medicine also includes a great deal of exercise because physical workouts can help prevent disease and slow down the aging process.
Sports medicine is a branch of medicine that deals with physical fitness and the treatment and prevention of injuries related to sports and exercise.
Although most sports teams have employed team physicians for many years, it is only since the late 20th century that sports medicine has emerged as a distinct field of health care.
In some countries, Sports medicine (or Sport and Exercise medicine) is a recognized medical specialty (with similar training and standards to other medical specialties), whereas in other countries it is a special interest area but not an actual specialty.
Orthopaedics is a large part of sports medicine, and knee injuries a common theme. Here a subject is having the anterior-posterior laxity of his knee tested.
DEFINITION OF SPORTS MEDICINE :-
Sports medicine is a branch of medicine that. deals with Physical Fitness, treatment and. prevention of injuries related to sports and. exercise.
The medical care of the exercising individual, including the assessment and management of patients with musculoskeletal injuries and medical problems arising from sporting activity.
OBJECTIVE OF SPORTS MEDICINE
*To provide information to sports person about sports injuries.
*To provide knowledge about causes of
injuries due to improper conditioning, faulty techniques, improper warming up,environmental factors and improper fitness.
*To provide treatment and rehabilitation for sports injuries. Medical treatments such as hydro therapy, electro therapy, IR rays therapy etc. are informed to sportpersons.
*To provide knowledge about the preventive measures of sports injuries.
